Trauma
Reginald R. Cooper, M.D. Research Grant Recipient
Topic: Investigated how skeletal muscle changes when it is immobilized by a cast.
Results: Showed that changes to skeletal muscle are caused by immobility associated with various disorders more than the disorders themselves, which encouraged doctors to apply treatments that avoid immobilizing and encourage limited movement after diseases or injury.
Patient Care Application of Results: Diseases and injuries, such as fractures, heal stronger and more quickly. |
Randall E. Marcus, M.D. Research Grant Recipient
"The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation was the first organization to fund my interests in research early in my academic career. It allowed me to become involved with the basic science of orthopaedic surgery and realize the importance of a scientific basis to enable progress in the treatment of our patients."
Topic: Studied the metabolic response to traumatic injuries, particularly long bone fractures.
Patient Care Application of Results: Better treatments for traumatic injuries such as long bone fractures, resulting in less pain and faster healing.
