OREF Highlights

Recognizing that the clinical impact of research on health outcomes is important, OREF, in conjunction with the AAOS, established the Fellowship in Health Services Research in 1993.

Since 1993, OREF has awarded $965,000 to fund 16 Health Services Fellowships. Recipients have used their fellowship to take classes on:

  • Biostatistics
  • Precise methods for research design
  • Methods of identifying and resolving common ethical dilemmas that arise in clinical research
  • How race, ethnicity, social class and culture affect the interpretation of clinical research
  • Offered annually, the intent of these Fellowships is to provide the Fellow with one year of classroom experience in areas of study, design, epidemiology and statistics, and one year to conduct a major research project. As the government and the public become more vocal in asking "what does this research mean?" and "what have you done for me lately?" this skill set will become more important to the specialty.

Beginning in 2005, the Health Services Fellowship will be renamed the Clinical Research Training Fellowship.

    RETURN TO OREF HIGHLIGHTS

"There's a very strong connection between somebody receiving an OREF grant early on in their career and developing NIH fundability. I think the OREF provides infrastructure for that individual to develop the scientific mind."
