OREF Highlights

In 1988, Bristol-Myers-Squibb-Zimmer established a grant for excellence in research in orthopaedic treatment. These grants were awarded to departments for research projects designed to positively affect the treatment, and ultimately patient care, of orthopaedic disease processes or conditions.

With these grants, between 1988 and 2000, 20 institutions each received $50,000 per year for five years. Some projects included:

  • Biology of Skeletal Repair

  • Academic Enhancement of Orthopaedic Research

  • Tissue Response to Orthopedic Implants

  • Treatment of Kidney Transplant Patient with a Lipid-Lowering Agent to Prevent Osteonecrosis

  • "The OREF grant has given additional financial support to our pediatric orthopedic research section. Hopefully the grant will give greater ability to the laboratory to gain other financial resources to further additional research projects in the area of children's orthopaedics."
