OREF Highlights

OREF has funded $612,059 for 68 Department Grants since 1984.

Recognizing that most promising young researchers start while at an academic institution, OREF began its Departmental Grants in 1984. With a goal of assisting Department Chairmen with their research and teaching activities, these grants were developed to fund diverse needs such as laboratory construction and equipment, specialized conferences, meetings and lectureships, and related purposes.

"In 1987 the University of Washington School of Medicine received a Department grant that helped to establish a Microsurgery Laboratory where surgeons could learn to operate on small nerves and blood vessels using a microscope. Today we are training young surgeons in the art of microsurgery using this laboratory."
