OREF Highlights

After several years of awarding both Research Grants and Resident Research Awards, the Board realized that the next step for OREF was to support and encourage long-term commitments to serious researchers. Consequently, in 1984, OREF began providing Career Development Awards.

Since 1984, OREF has funded 53 Career Development Awards worth nearly $8.2 million. Sample research topics include studies of how cartilage is repaired, the natural course the human body takes to heal bone and joint injuries, studies of internal fixation devices, and the factors involved in rotator cuff repair.

These awards provide funding for three years to candidates who have a commitment to scientific research in orthopaedic surgery. Candidates for this award must have completed an orthopaedic residency and demonstrated a significant interest in research. The Career Development Awards sustain the researchers who could impact orthopaedics in the future.

RETURN TO OREF HIGHLIGHTS

"The Career Development Awards are instrumental in providing funding for outstanding orthopaedic surgeons to pursue research interests to develop important data that can be used for applications to the NIH and other agencies. It serves as a bridge for early investigators whose ultimate goal is to be an investigator in an orthopaedic department."
