OREF Highlights

Another way to fund education is the Hark Lectureship series. These awards of up to $2,500, made possible with an endowment established by Fred W. Hark, M.D., are awarded to orthopaedic organizations to support lectures of interest to orthopaedic surgeons. Dr. Fred Hark was a former Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush University, and he was also a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Illinois. He served at Hines VA Hospital, Henrotin Hospital, and Mary Thomson (Women and Children's) Hospital. He was president of the Chicago Orthopaedic Society in 1964 and a member of AAOS and ABOS. William A. Hark, M.D., Fred's son, was Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Illinois and Senior Attending Surgeon at Rush, Hines VA Hospital and Henrotin Hospital.

Since 1982, OREF has awarded $224,500 for 91 Hark Lectureship. Some of the organizations using Hark Lectureships have included:

  • The University of Illinois
  • Rush Medical College of Rush University
  • The Academic Orthopaedic Society
  • The Hughston Sports Medicine Foundation
  • The Western Orthopaedic Society, Puget Sound Chapter
  • After Dr. Fred Hark's passing, his wife continued funding the grant he had established, which has allowed OREF to help several orthopaedic organizations enhance their educational programs.

Lectures OREF has funded throughout the past 20 years have covered topics ranging from the physiology of leg lengthening to the role played by clubfoot surgery.

    RETURN TO OREF HIGHLIGHTS

"My justification for contributing to OREF annually, and on a special basis, and in my will is to ensure the future of our profession. Clinical research, orthopaedic experts in patient care, orthopaedic educators, and orthopaedic laboratory scientists all are nourished by today's funds from OREF. This benefits patients in many ways, and it ensures that there will be progress toward more and better treatment for orthopaedic patients now and in the future."
