OREF Highlights

In recognition of the "E" in OREF, the Board of Trustees began to award Educational Grants in 1963. The purpose of these grants was to fund educational programs developed in conjunction with a recognized national orthopaedic organization. Such programs evaluate the effectiveness of orthopaedic education at all levels and can include:

Nearly 120 Educational Awards totaling $2.5 million have been awarded since 1963. Organizations that have received Educational Grants have included, among others, the AOA, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Orthopaedics Overseas.

  • Clinical consensus conferences

  • Workshops and symposia

  • Research and development of educational electronic media

  • Innovative approaches to education

Some of the programs OREF has funded since 1963 have included such educational lectures as: instruction of orthopaedic surgery; discussion of academic careers in orthopaedic surgery; and, more recently, discussions of business aspects of being a clinician scientist. Other lectures that OREF has funded with educational grants have covered topical issues such as gene therapy in rheumatology and orthopaedics. These awards supplement the research we fund and complement topics covered by CME courses.

    RETURN TO OREF HIGHLIGHTS

  • "Using an OREF Grant, we have funded the beginning of the study of the Jaffe-Erdheim-Campbell collection. The collection includes imaging studies, histology, and typed description of diseases and outcomes, which we believe can serve to educate orthopaedic residents, fellows, and staff, as well as provide a basis for clinical research.

Though there are more diseases to study, with our grant support we have already developed a number of CDs on such disorders as chondroblastoma, chondrosarcoma, fibrous dysplasia, giant cell tumor, histiocytosis, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, osteocartilaginous exostosis, Paget's disease, and Paget's sarcoma."
